HRO’s office project in Paris, France awarded WELL Certification at the Gold Level

(Bezons, Paris, March 7, 2017) – SCENEO, the latest office project by HRO in Bezons (Paris), has been officially recognised as the first building in Continental Europe to be awarded WELL Certification at the Gold level by the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™). This prized distinction was awarded through IWBI’s WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™), which is the world’s first building standard to focus on enhancing people’s health and wellness through the built environment. The accreditation is increasingly required by leading companies in the United States and Asia as it imposes extensive design criteria on developers to encourage staff wellness. It sets a high standard that is now being sought across Europe.

Created through seven years of rigorous research and development working with leading physicians, scientists, and industry professionals, WELL is a performance-based certification system that marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research. SCENEO earned the distinction based on seven categories of building performance – air, water, light nourishment, fitness, comfort and mind – and achieved a Gold level rating.

“Prioritizing the needs and expectations of the occupants at the heart of our projects is one of the pillars of HRO's designs, and integrating the culture of wellness is a standard throughout our projects. The certification process required the special vigilance of our technical team during preparatory phases, including testing, audits, and the integration of optimizations,” said Virginie Scaglia, in charge of Sustainable Development Certification, HRO France. “WELL enlightens us on the impacts of the built environment on the comfort and wellness of the tenants, and we have integrated WELL features into our future operation plans accordingly, such as positioning the restaurant and cafeteria on the top floors of our buildings. By doing so, the occupants can escape during their break and enjoy an impenetrable view of the natural and urban elements.”

Putting people at the heart of its design has long been the core criteria in HRO’s 45 year history in the United States and Europe, and this philosophy has kept the company at the forefront of the office development industry. Extending this experience to further promote employee health and wellness at work in its new design has been achieved by combining HRO’s deep technical expertise with a practical working knowledge of how its buildings are actually run by a broad variety of users. At SCENEO, occupants benefit from an ideal working environment throughout the day with bright but controlled light levels, acoustic attenuations, enhanced air quality, and layouts that encourage healthy and less sedentary working practices. The building environment enables views over landscaped parks and the Seine and towards Paris-La Défense. With this backdrop, HRO took the unique initiative to elevate the restaurant and cafeteria to the most noble upper floor for staff to fully enjoy their relaxation time. The level of interior decoration, by Alberto Pinto, is exceptional around the stunning atrium, terraces, landscaped garden, lifts, amenities, and circulation areas so as to encourage conviviality outside the office zones.

“When you put people at the center of design, you celebrate their potential by making the spaces they occupy work to enhance their well-being and comfort,” said IWBI Chairman and CEO Rick Fedrizzi. “Sceneo is demonstrating the power of that with its achievement of being the first building in France to achieve WELL certification, and we congratulate them on this significant accomplishment. This is leadership at its finest."

SCENEO is a 130.000 square foot office building with the highest environmental certifications: BBC (Low Consumption Building), "Exceptional" HQE (High Environmental Quality), and "Excellent" BREEAM. Added to this technical excellence, the WELL Certification at the Gold level recognises HRO’s contribution to promoting a culture that drives both human and environmental sustainability in its buildings.

“We achieved WELL Certification on an existing building. Succeeding in the challenge of certifying SCENEO at the Gold level proves that our specifications are always at the forefront of market demand and regulations. This prepares us to pursue certification for our futures projects, adds Fouad Chafqi, Technical Manager, HRO France.

WELL is grounded in a body of scientific research that explores the connection between the buildings where we spend more than 90 percent of our time, and the health and wellness impacts on us as occupants. To be awarded WELL Certification by IWBI, SCENEO underwent rigorous testing and a final evaluation carried out by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which is the third-party certification body for WELL, to ensure it met all WELL Certified™ Gold level performance requirements.

"With the successful WELL Certification of SCENEO and the inclusion of WELL Accredited Professionals within our staff, we are delighted to be able to offer continued support to our customers at HRO regarding the WELL Certification Process. The successful development of G-ON shows a strong expectation of the real estate actors and also the users who occupy these buildings. But watch out for exaggeration,” said Gwenaël JAN, Managing Director and WELL AP. “Innovation is essential for us, but we help our customers to make sense of it. WELL differentiates projects by creating a synergy between human and environmental issues, and it is this synergy that we have chosen to develop by founding G-ON. "
