WELL Certification

Today, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) announced the release of the WELL Core and Shell Certification program as a part of the WELL Building Standard (WELL) v1.

This programmatic enhancement represents an increased effort to recognize projects integrating health and wellness features into the core and shell of the building. It also provides higher levels of recognition for WELL Core and Shell projects going above and beyond the minimum requirements for WELL. WELL Core and Shell certified projects enable tenants to pursue WELL certification for their interior spaces and provide healthy and productive amenity spaces to their occupants.

Core and Shell Certification includes three different levels of recognition:

  • • Silver Certification • Gold Certification • Platinum Certification

Core and Shell projects that register for WELL will automatically be enrolled in the Core and Shell Certification program. Projects registered under the Core and Shell Compliance program may choose to upgrade to the Core and Shell Certification program or may remain under the compliance program. In line with this increased recognition for Core and Shell projects, the WELL Building Standard has been updated to allow all project types to receive recognition for their innovative health and wellness features. The WELL Building Standard now includes 3 additional innovation features, for a total of 5. Innovation features are supplemental and can help a project achieve a higher level of certification. The WELL Core and Shell requirements and additional Innovation features may be viewed in the WELL Building Standard v1 with May 2016 addenda. All itemized addenda to the WELL Building Standard may be viewed here.
